12012 vs 12025 vs 12038: Choosing a 120mm DC Fan

12012, 12025 and 12038 describe different fan depths, not a universal performance ranking. In SXDOOL’s 120 mm DC axial families, they identify nominal frames of 120 x 120 x 12 mm, 120 x 120 x 25 mm and 120 x 120 x 38 mm. Start with the available installation envelope, then select an exact electrical and performance configuration. A deeper fan is not automatically the correct fan, and a thinner fan is not automatically quieter.

This guide helps equipment designers narrow the family choice before requesting a model-specific drawing and sample. It does not substitute a family name for an orderable configuration or promise a cooling result for an untested enclosure.

Choose a starting family from the mechanical constraint

12012: when shallow installation space drives the design

The SXDOOL 12012 slim DC family has a nominal 12 mm frame depth. It is a starting point for a shallow electronics housing, instrument enclosure or display assembly where a conventional deeper frame would conflict with adjacent components.

Do not allocate only 12 mm for the complete installation. The guard, fasteners, connector, cable bend and inlet/outlet clearance also need space. If a slim frame fits but the inlet is obstructed, passing a dimensional check alone does not establish a satisfactory cooling path.

12025: when a 25 mm frame fits the equipment panel

The SXDOOL 12025 DC family provides a nominal 25 mm frame depth. Review it where the panel or chassis has room for that frame plus installation clearance. Compare the exact grade against the duty point, supply and noise budget; the family contains configurations rather than one shared set of electrical ratings.

Moving from a slim housing to a 25 mm frame requires a fresh assembly check. Do not assume matching face dimensions guarantee matching mounting details, cable access or the same connector.

12038: when a deeper frame is available for curve comparison

The SXDOOL 12038 DC family has a nominal 38 mm frame depth. Where the enclosure permits this depth, include suitable configurations in the comparison for a restricted air path, such as a design containing guards, filters or closely spaced components.

Do not select a 12038 simply because it is deeper. Check its actual pressure-airflow curve, power demand and acoustic data under comparable conditions. This is a selection approach, not a claim that every 12038 outperforms every 12025.

Keep three different dimensions separate

  1. Fan frame size: the nominal body dimensions used to identify the family.
  2. Installed assembly envelope: the space taken by the fan, guard, harness, hardware and required clearance.
  3. Panel opening and mounting pattern: dimensions from the applicable installation drawing.

A nominal 120 mm frame is not an instruction to cut a 120 mm square opening. Review the drawing before machining a panel or releasing tooling. For a filter-fan assembly, obtain the assembly drawing rather than using the bare fan dimensions.

Compare the same operating condition

Use the required airflow at the equipment’s pressure resistance as the comparison point. Free-air airflow and maximum static pressure describe different endpoints; they are not delivered together. NMB’s fan-selection guide likewise treats packaging, system impedance and the operating point as linked selection inputs.

For a panel with a filter, record the filter condition used during evaluation. For a dense electronics enclosure, review the air path with the internal components and covers installed. These are proposed evaluation conditions, not statements that a particular SXDOOL model has passed your equipment test.

Select voltage and signals after the family shortlist

A family page may list several voltage options. Those are separate configurations, not permission to connect one fan across all listed voltages. Specify the supply type, nominal voltage and tolerance for the exact ordered model.

Also identify whether you need PWM control, FG speed feedback or an alarm output. Do not infer those functions from the frame depth, number of wires or a photograph. Confirm the connector and pin assignment against the selected configuration’s drawing.

A short brief that makes a sample request useful

  • Available frame depth and the complete installation envelope.
  • Panel and mounting drawings, including guards and nearby obstructions.
  • Supply voltage, tolerance, startup constraints and power budget.
  • Required airflow/pressure point or the equipment’s thermal acceptance target.
  • Acoustic limit, ambient conditions and any required environmental evidence.
  • Control/feedback functions, connector details, sample quantity and anticipated order quantity.

Common family-selection questions

Can a 12012 replace a 12025 to recover space?

Only after mechanical, electrical and cooling requirements are rechecked. Sharing a 120 mm nominal face size does not establish equivalent installed performance.

Does moving to 12038 guarantee enough pressure for a filter?

No. Review the selected fan curve with the actual filter and enclosure resistance. Depth alone is not a pressure specification.

Which family should appear on the purchase order?

Use the approved complete model and configuration, not only 12012, 12025 or 12038. Retain the matching drawing revision, harness and sample approval with the order specification.
