Cooling fan selection

DC vs AC vs EC Cooling Fan Selection Guide

Choose the input power and motor platform before comparing size, airflow, static pressure, bearing, signal wire and cable options. SXDOOL reviews each fan recommendation around the equipment environment and RFQ requirements.

DC Axial Fans

Best fit for low-voltage equipment, electronics, power modules, servers and compact thermal paths.

  • 5V, 12V, 24V, 48V and 60V DC
  • PWM, FG and RD signal options
  • 20mm to 280mm platforms

AC Axial Fans

Best fit for mains-powered panels, equipment ventilation and continuous cabinet airflow.

  • 110V, 115V, 220V and 230V AC
  • Lead wire or terminal review
  • Metal or plastic frame options

EC Energy-Saving Fans

Compare AC-input EC candidates when the project requires electronic motor control. Confirm available speed-control functions and input power for the selected configuration at the required duty point.

  • 110V, 115V, 220V, 230V and wide-input options
  • PWM, FG or RD by project
  • 40mm to 280mm EC platforms

Blowers and Cabinet Ventilation

Use when the airflow path needs static pressure, ducted airflow or enclosure filter ventilation.

  • Centrifugal airflow paths
  • Filter fan and louver assemblies
  • Cutout and mounting review
Decision to makeCandidate direction and approval condition
What supply is available at the fan?Use DC candidates for a specified DC supply. For AC mains, compare AC and AC-input EC candidates. Confirm rated input and allowable supply range on the exact model drawing; a family name is not a voltage specification.
What airflow is needed through the actual equipment?Provide the target airflow together with pressure drop from filters, ducts, grilles and heat sinks. Compare a model curve at that duty point; free-air airflow alone does not qualify the installation.
Will the fan and cable fit?Check frame depth, mounting-hole pattern, inlet/outlet clearance, airflow direction and connector position against a controlled drawing.
Does the controller need PWM, FG or RD?Request the selected configuration’s pinout and electrical signal limits. A matching wire count or connector shape does not establish compatibility.
Is lower energy use a project requirement?Compare input power at the same required airflow and pressure, including the intended control mode. Do not infer a project energy-saving percentage from the EC label.
Is the environment suitable?Specify inlet temperature, dust, moisture, installation orientation, operating schedule and acoustic limits. Request evidence applicable to the selected configuration.
When is a candidate ready for production approval? After the drawing and electrical interface are confirmed and samples pass the buyer’s thermal, acoustic and integration checks in the intended equipment.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to choose between DC, AC and EC fans?

Start with the supply available at the fan and the required airflow at system pressure. Compare DC candidates for a specified DC supply, or AC and AC-input EC candidates for a mains-powered design. Confirm the exact model’s electrical interface, operating limits and sample results before approval.

Can SXDOOL review PWM, FG or RD signal options?

Yes. SXDOOL can review PWM speed control, FG tachometer feedback and RD alarm output for suitable DC or EC cooling fan projects.

What should an engineer send before selecting a fan?

Send frame size, voltage, airflow or static pressure target, noise limit, bearing, cable length, connector, signal wire, application environment and estimated quantity.

DC axial model routes

Compare DC fan frames by size and installation depth

Use these model routes to compare the mechanical platform before requesting a voltage, speed, bearing, connector and signal configuration. Final approval should follow the controlled drawing and a test at the real system resistance.
