Cooling Fans for Network Switches and Routers
Review switch and router cooling around ASICs, optics, airflow direction, redundancy, startup control and acoustics before qualifying an SXDOOL candidate.

Select around the equipment's thermal architecture
Network-switch and router fan selection starts inside the chassis. A procurement specification should describe how air reaches the switching ASIC, optical modules and power electronics, then leaves the equipment. Cabinet ventilation establishes the inlet environment; it does not establish the temperature of each internal component. Texas Instruments identifies ASIC, CPU and power-management requirements as core elements of fixed-switch design. TI switch design resources
Map the ASIC's thermal path, the occupied transceiver cages, and the power-supply cooling route. Juniper's QFX5240 adjusts fan speed using internal-component, optics and ambient temperatures. Some platforms have separately cooled supplies: Extreme's 5520 documentation states that PSU fans operate independently of chassis fans. For PoE thermal budgeting, distinguish power delivered to remote devices from local circuitry and conversion losses. Cisco's C9350 architecture separates system power and endpoint PoE power. Match direction and pressure requirements
Record airflow relative to the ports and removable modules, together with the rack's cold-air supply. Juniper prohibits mixing airflow-in and airflow-out fans or supplies in a QFX5130 chassis. A matching frame size cannot establish this compatibility. Engineering validation should measure temperatures with the actual heat sinks, grilles, cables and occupied ports; free-air airflow alone is an incomplete selection basis. Juniper QFX5130 cooling
Specify the degraded operating condition
Define whether redundancy covers a rotor, a complete module or its controller. The QFX5130-32CD can continue operating with five functioning modules while the sixth remains installed, but the QFX5130-48C uses rotor-level redundancy and requires all six modules. Juniper also instructs users to keep a failed unit installed until replacement to preserve airflow. For a new design, validate the remaining cooling capacity and alarms under the intended failure condition. Juniper redundancy distinctions
Set an acoustic requirement with operating conditions
A wiring-closet noise target needs a defined equipment configuration and measurement method. Cisco publishes Catalyst 9300 acoustic results with ambient temperature, PoE loading, bystander position and measurement standards. Use equivalent conditions when comparing options. Include an agreed thermal-load test and the fan-failure condition in the acceptance plan; an idle listening check cannot validate those states. Cisco Catalyst 9300 acoustic conditions
Treat startup and control as part of integration
Document supply range, starting current, connector pinout, control input, speed feedback and fault signalling separately. Also define behavior before the host controller becomes ready. Cisco's CRS cooling description documents initial boot airflow before software fan control takes over. Hot-swap capability belongs to the approved equipment assembly and service procedure; it does not establish permission to substitute a loose fan. Cisco CRS startup cooling
Frequently asked questions
Can I select a replacement from frame size alone?
No. Match the chassis airflow variant, supply, controller interface, mounting and approved module design. In Juniper's QFX5130 example, fan and power-supply airflow must match. This is a platform-specific requirement, not a claim that an SXDOOL fan is approved for that chassis. Juniper cooling instructions.
Does a redundant fan tray mean any one module can be removed?
Do not assume that. Redundancy may apply to individual rotors or whole modules, and leaving a gap can change the airflow path. Follow the equipment's service procedure and qualify the intended failure state. Documented QFX5130 variant differences.
Why can fan speed rise after changing optical modules?
Some platforms use optics temperature in fan control. Compare the transceiver population and temperature data as well as ASIC load before changing the fan. Juniper QFX5240 temperature inputs.
Is PoE output power the same as heat inside the switch?
No. Separate the power delivered to external endpoints from losses in the switch's conversion and distribution circuitry. Build the local heat budget for the actual configuration. Cisco C9350 system and PoE power architecture.
SXDOOL candidates to review
Use SXD6038B24H-RDP as a model reference when requesting a configuration review for a new switch or router design. Request the current dimensional drawing, rated supply, startup requirements, connector pinout, and control/alarm specification. Confirm whether the chassis controller requires PWM control, FG speed feedback, an alarm output, or a combination. Match the exact offered configuration, then validate airflow direction, installed cooling, fault response and noise in the completed equipment.
Selection boundary: This is not a drop-in replacement claim for Cisco, Juniper, Extreme or another equipment brand. For an existing proprietary fan tray, confirm the approved module, airflow variant, connector, electronics and service procedure with the equipment manufacturer; a loose fan with matching dimensions is insufficient.
