Auto-Restart and Locked Rotor Protection in Cooling Fans
How Auto-Restart and Locked Rotor Protection Save Your Equipment

In industrial environments, things do not always go as planned. Dust, debris, or a mechanical obstruction can sometimes jam a cooling fan, causing it to stop spinning. If a fan motor remains powered while it is stuck—a condition known as a **Locked Rotor**—it can quickly overheat, leading to motor burnout or even a fire hazard. To prevent such catastrophes, high-quality Brushless DC (BLDC) fans are equipped with **Locked Rotor Protection** and **Auto-Restart**. At SXDOOL (Sensda Electronics Limited), we integrate these safety features into our fans as standard to ensure the highest level of equipment protection.
What is Locked Rotor Protection?
In a traditional motor without protection, if the rotor is held stationary, the current flowing through the motor coils increases exponentially. This excessive current generates intense heat, which can melt the winding insulation and permanently damage the stator. Locked Rotor Protection is an electronic circuit—often integrated into the motor's driver IC—that detects when the fan has stopped spinning despite being powered. When a lock is detected, the IC immediately cuts or severely limits the current to the windings, keeping the temperature at a safe level.
The Benefit of Auto-Restart
Locked rotor protection alone would mean the fan stays off until a manual reset is performed. However, many obstructions—like a piece of loose tape or a temporary surge in dust—may be transient. This is where **Auto-Restart** comes in. After the fan detects a lock and shuts down the current, it enters a "retry" mode. Every few seconds, the driver IC will briefly attempt to restart the motor. If the obstruction has been cleared, the fan will resume normal operation. If the rotor is still locked, the fan will shut down again and wait for the next retry interval.
Protecting Your Total System
The combination of these two features provides several key benefits for industrial B2B partners:
- Reduced Downtime: If a temporary obstruction is cleared, the system recovers automatically without human intervention.
- Fire Safety: By preventing motor burnout, you eliminate a common source of electrical fires in enclosures.
- Component Protection: If the fan stops, the system may overheat. Our fans can also include a **Rotation Detector (RD)** or **Frequency Generator (FG)** signal to alert the system's main controller that the fan has failed, allowing for a safe system shutdown.
Reliability Beyond Electronics
At SXDOOL, we don't just stop at electronic protection. We also address mechanical reliability by using Japanese NMB dual ball bearings, which provide a 70,000-hour life at 40°C. Our use of UL94V-0 PBT plastic for the fan frame and impeller adds another layer of fire safety and structural durability. Our fans are CE, RoHS, FCC, and ISO9001 certified, ensuring they meet the world's most rigorous engineering standards.
